Ylang Ylang Essential Oils

Ylang ylang essential oil plantYlang Ylang is possibly the most intensely sweet, fragrant, floral aroma we know. 'Ylang Ylang' means 'flower of flowers' and provides a floral note that is often used in perfumery.
  • The essential oil has great therapeutic value, being soothing, calming and relaxing. This makes it wonderful in stress reducing blends, soothing away anger and frustration.
  • A little of this oil goes a very long way because it has such a dominating effect and tenacious quality. It can be inhaled direct from the bottle at moments of extreme stress, but too much of this oil can cause headache or nausea.
  • It often finds its way into romantic and sensual oil blends, such as 1001 Nights Massage Oil - a sort of relax and let go oil. Try it in blends with Bergamot, Sweet Orange, or other citrus oils, Rose or Sandalwood.

About Ylang Ylang Essential Oils

About Ylang Ylang Essential Oils

Ylang Ylang is widely used in the perfume industry which specifies different ‘grades’. These ‘grades’ have subtly different aromas and are actually different fractions from the distillation process. The oil that comes first is called ‘extra’, followed by grades I, II, and III. When all the fractions are carefully blended back together, this is the ‘Complete’ oil, and it is this which would probably be the first choice therapeutically.

Method of extraction: The oil is steam- or water-distilled from the flowers of Canaga odorata forma genuina. The ‘Extra’ oil comes in about an hour, I comes up to two and a half hours, II is after 3-4 hours, and III is after that, surprisingly up to 14 hours.

Note: Cananga oil is also derived from Cananga odorata but from a different form of the tree: Cananga odorata forma macrophylla rather than genuina.

Help me choose:
This can be confusing as we offer several different oils. The distillation process of ylang ylang produces a number of different grades of the oil, with different qualities. The first distillate is known as Extra, and is considered the finest. Successive grades are usually numbered I, II, and III, and a further oil – known as Complete – is created from Extra, I and II. Here ares some impressions of the different Ylang Ylang oils:

  • Ylang Ylang Complete Organic (3030): This is the one you probably want for aromatherapy: a beautifully-crafted rounded blend of the different fractions. It absolutely feels ‘complete’.
  • Ylang Ylang Extra Organic (3041) and Ylang Ylang Extra (3040): The ‘Extra’ comes from the first part of the distillation. This one has the most powerful top note, ethereal, light and playful with immense complexity. An immediate ‘hit’ to the limbic system when inhaled. The organic one has more top notes.
  • Ylang Ylang I Organic (3026): Distinctly ‘heavier’ than the Extra, with a buttery, minty, rich, saturated, more grounding effect.
  • Ylang Ylang II Organic (3027) and Ylang Ylang II (3029): Richer and somewhat fruitier than III. Great to use in a skincare blend.
  • Ylang Ylang III Organic (3028): Distinctively missing the ethereal top notes of the earlier fractions, yet with a charming simplicity and directness.
