Safe Use of Essential Oils

essential-oil-safety.jpgEssential oils are highly concentrated, therapeutic agents with multiple benefits for mind, body and spirit. But bear in mind that they require respect and basic understanding of their applications.

Less can be more

Essential oils are used in increments of drops, and ‘less can be more’ when working with pure aromatherapy oils. If you are under the supervision of a health care professional, please consult them before using essential oils.

As long as you bear this in mind, essential oils can be used by almost all adults, depending on the oil, the dilution, and the method of use. For example some are much less suited for use on the skin but can be diffused relatively safely. Remember also that the effect created is an interaction between the oil, the dilution, and the individual. Some people are more sensitive than others and should exercise greater caution.

Aromatherapy massage

In aromatherapy massage, essential oils are used externally in a dilution of carrier oils such as sweet almond, jojoba, sesame or sunflower. The normal dilution for a general body massage is 1-3% (i.e. approximately 7-20 drops in 30ml carrier oil). It is recommended to use a lower percentage for children and the elderly however a higher concentration can be used for topical application over a small area. It is worth noting that the drop size can vary depending on the viscosity of the oil, the temperature etc. If your application requires a precise measurement it is recommended to use a graduated pipette.

Below are some guidelines for use with babies and children.

For considerations regarding specific essential oils, you may find the contraindications section in our product descriptions helpful.

In more general terms, be sure that the essential oils you use are of the best quality and have been correctly stored to ensure freshness. If in doubt, trust your nose!

Always keep essential oils of out the reach of children, and away from your eyes.
