Oshadhi Essential Oils – Your Complete Guide

Welcome to Oshadhi!

Here you will find out how Oshadhi came to be, and how you can connect with us. Oshadhi stands as a beacon of purity, diversity, and captivating scents. Oshadhi is a movement, celebrating life, beauty, wisdom, and health through essential oils, hydrosols, and skincare. Dive into our world, where nature’s treasures are brought to you with with care and integrity.

The meaning of Oshadhi

The name Oshadhi has its roots in Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. In simple terms, it means “bringer of light.” Plants have this amazing ability to soak up sunlight and turn it into energy and wonderful fragrances. So, when we say Oshadhi, we’re really talking about how plants harness the sun’s energy to give us those aromatic oils.

Long ago, during India’s Vedic era, the great sages were experts in essential oils and herbs. They called these healing plants ‘Oshadhi,’ meaning they bestowed the energy of light. At Oshadhi, we embrace the natural, unaltered power of plant oils. Our products are all about purity, diversity, and incredible scents.

How to spell Oshadhi

Spelling Oshadhi can be quite a challenge, especially if you’ve only heard it spoken. A lot of our customers discover Oshadhi through recommendations from friends or colleagues. This can lead to some interesting variations in spelling. Curious to see how many different ways people can get it wrong, we did a little investigation. It turns out there are over 120 unique misspellings out there! Some of them are pretty creative and quite unusual – they definitely brought a smile to our faces. Our personal favourite? “Odashi” – sounds like something you’d say when you’re running late!

How to pronounce Oshadhi

There’s another topic that often stirs up discussion – the pronunciation of Oshadhi. It’s a common question we get when people call us for the first time. Many tend to place the emphasis on the middle syllable: Uh-SHARD-i. Especially those of us in the office who hail from the North! But here’s the thing: the correct pronunciation is OH-shad-ee. That said, we’re totally happy with whichever way you prefer, or anything between.

Back in the 1990s, Dr. Malte Hozzel founded the Oshadhi brand, which has now made its mark in over 40 countries worldwide. Dr. Hozzel’s journey has taken him across the globe in search of the most skilled producers.

Our ‘treasure hunt’ for the best essential oils goes on and on.

His ongoing mission? To assemble a collection of essential oils renowned for their unwavering purity and exceptional therapeutic benefit. These incredible qualities are innate to the plants themselves. As suppliers, our role is to ensure that each oil captures the healing essence of the plant in its purest form. It’s pretty amazing that we can bottle up these plant treasures in those little blue bottles. Our “treasure hunt” for the best essential oils goes on and on, always surprising us and fueling our desire for more. It’s a challenge we wholeheartedly embrace. We take pride in being part of a movement that values life, beauty, wisdom, and health.

The misuse of natural resources has taken a toll on our soil. This is due to practices like clear-cutting, over-harvesting, and mono-cultural farming. The use of chemicals has only exacerbated the problem. Sadly, many farmers are unaware of the grave consequences of these widespread practices. At Oshadhi, we’re committed to championing organic farming. We choose to partner with producers who understand how to collaborate with nature in a caring and sustainable manner. Over the course of our journey, we’ve forged connections with over 100 farmers of medicinal plants. We ensure they’re dedicated to treating the soil with wisdom and respect.

Oshadhi in the UK

Oshadhi is distributed in the UK by Jonathan Hinde.

Jonathan says:

I have known Malte Hozzel for many years. When he offered me the opportunity to represent his Oshadhi line of essential oils, I jumped at it. What a privilege it was to suddenly have access to 500 different top quality oils! But at the same time it is quite a responsibility.

I met Malte initially when we taught meditation together. We come from the same understanding when it comes to using essential oils to enhance health, growth and wellbeing. They are gifts from the plant world. Their energy and healing power is absolutely necessary at this turbulent time in the history of the world.

Range of Oshadhi products

Set of 10 essential oils against a background of lavender and camomile fields in Provence.Oshadhi is a specialist supplier of essential oils and aromatherapy products. Our extensive selection includes over 500 essential oils, 80+ carrier oils and 80+ hydrosols. We stock popular and well-known essential oils for everyday use plus many new and unusual oils. These are emerging in the field of aromatherapy. Essential oils are used in many different therapies and disciplines. They are also used in the manufacture of natural perfumes, candles and skincare. Oshadhi’s unsurpassed range gives plenty of choice when creating new and unusual products.

Of course such a wide range of oils means that it can be hard to choose! You can search for products by application, properties or name. You can then use filters to narrow down the results. For more unusual oils it can be different to find reliable information on the properties and uses. In this case the chemistry can be a clue to how an oil can be used. Download the Gas Chromatography test results or product specification for more information.

Production of Oshadhi essential oils

Most of Oshadhi’s oils are produced by steam distillation. This is the most common way to produce essential oils and has been used traditionally for thousands of years. The exact method varies according to the location and the plant material. Whatever method is used, Oshadhi’s suppliers take care to produce the very best quality oils. This means a complex, deep aroma, a natural vibrant colour and the full range of therapeutic properties.

Picture of jasmine flowers. For plants that hold onto their aromatic elements tightly, we turn to extraction. Take floral oils like Jasmine and Osmanthus, for instance. Here’s how it works: we ‘wash’ the plant material using a solvent like hexane or butane. Afterward, we let the solvent evaporate, which leaves us with something called ‘concrete.’ Additional steps are taken to clear away any plant waxes, and what we end up with is known as an ‘absolute‘.

Picture of lemons growing on a tree. Some oils are made through a straightforward process known as ‘expression,’ which basically means pressing. Most of these oils come from citrus fruits such as Sweet Orange, Lemon and Grapefruit. Lime, on the other hand, is usually distilled and Bergamot can be produced using either method. Pressed Bergamot oil can make your skin sensitive to sunlight, whereas the distilled version doesn’t have this effect. In this case the distilled oil is better suited for massage and skin application however the pressed oil has a superior aroma.

Quality of Oshadhi essential oils

Laboratory technician carrying out gas chromatography test.Oshadhi goes the extra mile to ensure the quality and purity of our oils. We have strict quality control measures in place, so when you make a purchase, you can trust that you’re getting top-notch products.

The best-quality oils are achieved through a patient, slow distillation process carried out at low pressure. It may not be the most cost-efficient method, but the difference in quality is truly remarkable. Quick, high-pressure distillation tends to produce weaker oils lacking in depth and endurance. On the other hand, distillation at lower temperatures and pressure over an extended period can extract even the heaviest components. This gives an oil with a well-rounded aroma that encapsulates the plant’s full essence.

Our quality team meticulously tests every batch to ensure its purity, using a variety of physical and chemical assessments. Gas chromatography is employed to guarantee that the oil is 100% pure and true to nature.

Oshadhi hydrosols

Tuberhose hydrolate with a tuberose flower in the backgroundWe offer an extensive selection of aromatherapy hydrosols, which are also referred to as hydrolats (the term can be used interchangeably). The majority of these hydrosols are either certified organic or sourced from the wild. Hydrosols are the distilled waters obtained from the essential oil production process.

While hydrosols often share similar properties with essential oils, they may not always match in terms of fragrance. Hydrosols primarily contain the water-soluble components, as opposed to the volatile ones found in essential oils. In fact, some hydrosols have a completely different scent compared to their essential oil counterparts. Lavender hydrosol serves as an excellent example of this variation.

Hydrosols offer a gentle yet potent alternative to essential oils, making them well-suited for individuals of all ages or situations where a more subtle approach is required. For more in-depth information on the use of hydrosols, you can refer to Lydia Bosson’s book Hydrosol Therapy.

The use of aromatic hydrosols is a relatively new area of aromatherapy which shows great promise. A subtle but powerful approach from the ‘watery cousins’ of essential oils.

Historically, these oils have been used to “carry” essential oils in massage therapies. Nevertheless, they possess therapeutic qualities in their own right, particularly when it comes to skin care.

Many carrier oils are suitable for use as a nourishing facial oil in your daily skincare routine. You have the option to choose oils tailored to your specific skin type. Furthermore, carrier oils can be combined to craft a personalized massage blend tailored to a specific purpose. They can be applied either on their own or in conjunction with essential oils.
