Copaiba: Should I choose the resin or the distilled oil?

Two key products are produced: copaiba balsam which is the raw resin tapped directly from the tree and copaiba essential oil which is obtained through steam distillation of the resin.
The balsam is thicker and more viscous, containing heavier components absent in the essential oil. It is also more resource-efficient to produce, making it a practical choice for everyday use or where a larger volume is required.
The essential oil by contrast, is lighter and more refined, composed solely of the volatile components extracted through distillation. Its higher concentration of active compounds and ease of absorption make it particularly valued in aromatherapy. A precious oil that can be reserved for more acute topical application or when a lighter texture is preferred.
In terms of their therapeutic effects, the resin and the essential oil of copaiba share many properties. Copaiba oils are known for their soothing effects, particularly on the muscles and joints. They can be diluted in a carrier for topical use or massage. They are also valued in skincare, where they are gentle, non-allergenic and non-sensitising.
